Three Mariners catchers minor league prospect Mike Zunino, Jesus Montero, and the newly acquired Kelly Shoppach – go through some catching drills. (In that order.)
It’s interesting to watch the three. Shoppach, the veteran, is obviously the most fundamentally sound, and also has obvious leadership qualities that catchers need to have. Zunino has never played a major league game, but seems to have the makings of a solid major league catcher. Montero seems to be defensively the worst of the three. He seems green. But the Mariners acquired him for his bat, so as long as he hits, it’ll be fine. He’ll probably end up being a full-time DH at some point anyway.
